Stepping Into the Mantle: Lessons from Joshua (and My 4:19 Alarm)
Finding courage, provision, and faith step by step—just like Joshua.
I’m Aaron Joseph Hall, a pastor in Lower Alabama. Mark Batterson once said, ‘I do not type on a keyboard. I worship God with the 26 letters of the English alphabet.’ That’s what I’m doing here—worshiping God through the words I write. Every post is an act of worship, every sentence written for His glory. My desire is to be obedient each day to whatever God has called me to do. I’d love for you to join me on this journey.
🔥 Word for Today:
God is with you. You are not alone.
The sun was rising on a new season. Moses was gone, and God spoke to Joshua: “It’s your time now.” I wonder what it felt like to hear that…the excitement, the doubt, the fear. I know the feeling. I feel it every day, stepping into my own calling as a husband, dad, pastor, and writer.
I’m sure the words, “Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people…” were received with both expectant ears and human doubt. Joshua was just a man, a man used by God, but he wasn’t superhuman. He must have carried fears and questions. As the sun set on Moses’ season and rose on God’s call for Joshua, the struggle of stepping into that mantle must have been real.
The words, “For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you,” ring true in my heart. Moving hundreds of miles from home to plant a church is anything but easy.
As a husband, I wrestle with the fear of failing my bride, yet I know Christ’s strength can fill the gaps where I fall short.
As a dad, I wrestle with the weight of not always living up to my calling to disciple them.
As a pastor, I wrestle with the lies questioning my call to move, to plant, even to write.
I’m sure Joshua battled and wrestled with his fears, doubts, and concerns. Walking in the footsteps of Moses, the man God used to deliver a nation, part the Red Sea, and perform miracle after miracle, is no small feat.
I can’t imagine the weight Joshua felt like he had to carry. But to know God was with him like He was with Moses, that’s a game-changer.
And maybe that’s why I need reminders in my own life—reminders that the same God who promised Joshua His presence has promised to walk with me too.
The other day, my alarm went off. 4:19 AM.
Time to pray.
Every day at 4:19 AM and PM, my phone buzzes—not because I like early mornings all the time, but because I need to circle Philippians 4:19 with my life: “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”
It’s my way of leaning into God’s faithfulness, the same way Joshua had to. When fears of failing my wife, my boys, or even my calling creep in, that alarm pulls me back to truth—God is with me, and He will provide.
And I love how God provided for Joshua. He didn’t hand him the blueprint of the whole journey at once (I admit, I have prayed many times for the blueprint to our church planting journey, but God continues to be faithful even when I can’t see the whole picture). He gave Joshua courage step by step, city by city, battle by battle—and He’s doing that for me too. The manna in the wilderness, the parting of the Jordan, the walls of Jericho—each moment was a reminder that God was still present, still faithful, still providing.
That’s how He works with me, too. I don’t always get the whole picture of how church planting will unfold, or how I’ll meet the needs of my family, or how God will use my writing. But I get daily reminders—like that 4:19 alarm—that He’s not asking me to carry this mantle in my own strength. He’s simply asking me to trust Him for today—right now, in this moment as I write to worship Him, honor Him, and point others to Him.
The same God who stood with Joshua on the edge of the Promised Land stands with me in the unknown. And He’ll stand with you, too.
I believe that. Do you?

I love the idea of creating an alarm to pray according to His Word. The Lord will supply your needs.
This was great, thanks for sharing! I’m in a similar season myself right now so this really hit home.
I love how you purposely pray at 4:19 everyday. That actually inspires me to be more consistent in my prayer.
I do know it, God is with you and me, and He is our Jehovah Jireh—providing all that we need at just the right time.
Keep on planting and seeking Him, I know He is a faithful God.
