Overcoming Rejection
I had a top Christian publisher tell me I was not ready for "prime time" - I'll admit, that hurt. A lot.
I had a top Christian publisher tell me I was not ready for "prime time" - I'll admit, that hurt. A lot.
I wrote what I thought was a solid book proposal.
I got well-known authors to either write an endorsement or give me their word they would once the book hit the shelves.
I was ready...or, so I thought.
Can you relate?
For a lot of writers, this type of rejection would shut them down and they would never write again (or attempt publishing at least).
How many books were never published because of someone's no?
How many life-altering stories never reached the individuals they could have impacted the most?
Hundreds.
No, I would say hundreds of millions!
When I got the rejection email, instead of giving up, here's what I did instead:
I kept writing. I chose to not give up. I realized a publisher did not define me as a writer. I decided to follow something I call the WRITE framework.
What is the WRITE framework?
I'll break it down for you. This framework can be followed on whatever platform you write: ConvertKit, Substack, Medium, your blog, etc...
Okey, here it is.
W - write to 1 person, not the whole world. Find the 1 person you'd love to see in your audience and write with them in mind.
R - realize not everyone is going to like you! I couldn't let that one publisher who rejected me define me. Realizing this early on will save you a TON of heartache as a writer.
I - initiate conversations. Find writers you admire on Notes, X (or whatever platform you use) and start conversations with them! DM them, tag them, and better yet, comment with thoughtful responses to contribute to their posts. This will help you develop solid friendships with others in the same arena as you!
T - tell yourself every day that you're a writer. Being published or having thousands of email subscribers isn't what makes YOU a writer. If you write articles, newsletters, books, stories, etc...you, my friend, are a writer. So start acting like one and just start writing!
E - educate yourself. What do I mean by that? Just keep learning and growing! Connect with folks who've been writing for a while, maybe take a course or two. Dive into more books, and crank out more posts. Educate yourself along the way. It'll pay off down the road!
I have learned that if you follow the WRITE framework you can succeed.
Let me say that again:
I have learned that if you follow the RIGHT framework you can succeed.
See what I did there?
I believe this simple framework can help change your mindset so you can write more, write better, and reach more people.
Will you try it?
Happy writing! I'll see you next time!
Would you do me 2 quick favors?
If you enjoyed this post, I have 2 quick favors to ask:
Share this with someone! Post it to your social media accounts, text it to your favorite people, and help others subscribe! Referrals are super helpful in reaching more people!
Consider upgrading your subscription. Paid subscriptions help ensure the continued reach and growth of this newsletter! You’ll also help me buy more coffee, which will enable me to write more. If you enjoy my writing, or the way I write, your support helps tremendously! Thanks for considering! 😊
