Did You Hear That?
Sometimes, steady obedience looks like following God when you’re not 100% sure where the road leads, but you trust the One leading you.
We recently moved states. We moved because the Lord has called us to plant a new church in Lower Alabama. For some, the mere fact that I said God “called us” will cause them to raise an eyebrow as if I’m some heretic. Others will be interested in hearing all about how and why—how I knew God called us and why Daphne, Alabama, of all places.
Both good questions.
I remember when I felt like the Lord was telling me to marry Sarah. All the circumstances pointed to, “Marry her!” I believe God can speak through our circumstances—whenever He does speak, it’ll never contradict His written Word. Always test what you “hear” with what He’s already “written” down.
For example, if you hear something like God changes like the wind, and then you read in the Bible Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, do you really think you were hearing God speak?
I don’t think so. Likely, it was the pizza you had for dinner.
I think many times when we hear God speak, we tend to ask others in our lives personally (or some of you ask online)—Did you hear that?
That question in and of itself isn’t bad, but there lies a deeper problem.
The problem isn’t just doubting what we heard, but doubting if God actually speaks to people at all. Maybe you’ve wondered, “Was that really Him, or just my own thoughts?”
I get it.
This isn’t something to brush off lightly. The truth is, God can and does speak to people—sometimes in ways we expect, sometimes in ways that surprise us. But He never leaves us to figure it out alone. God whispers to us in many ways.
One thing I’ve learned: God isn’t scared of our questions. He isn’t rolling His eyes when we ask for wisdom or clarity. In fact, He invites us to come to Him—ask, seek, knock. He wants us to draw closer, not run off on our own. If you’re wrestling with something you think God might be saying, don’t just tuck it away. Bring it to Him. Look in His Word. Talk with people who know Him, who will give wise counsel instead of just what you want to hear.
James 1:5: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (LSB).
Moving our family across state lines wasn’t something I took lightly. We prayed. We read. We asked God for confirmation—sometimes more times than I’d like to admit. And each time, He met us with patience, guidance, and peace. Not every answer was dramatic, but even the quiet, steady nudges were real—very real.
So, if you’re hearing something and aren’t sure, don’t panic. You’re not alone in the questioning, and you’re definitely not alone in wanting to obey. I’d say you’re in a good place to draw closer than you’ve ever been with Jesus.
Sometimes, even after praying and reading Scripture, things still aren’t clear right away. I wish I could say every decision comes with a neon sign or a clear voice from heaven, but that’s not how it’s been for me. Most of the time, it’s been one small step of faith after another, one step of obedience after another. And honestly, that’s where trust grows the most—when you don’t have all the answers but keep moving forward anyway, trusting that God is with you in the unknown. God will provide, I’ve seen it firsthand. Even when I don’t have the answers or can’t see the how or the why—God honors obedience, God honors surrendered hearts!
There were moments when doubt crept in—did we really hear Him right? Should we wait a little longer? But in those times, I’ve learned to look back at all the ways God has led us before. He’s never failed us (and He never will). His track record is perfect, even when mine isn’t.
Sometimes, steady obedience looks like following God when you’re not 100% sure where the road leads, but you trust the One leading you.
If you’re wrestling with a decision or wondering if God is really guiding you, don’t be discouraged by the uncertainty. Keep seeking Him. Keep asking for His wisdom. Keep digging into your Bible. Keep writing in your prayer journal. Remember, He promises to guide our steps, even when they feel shaky. Just take the next right step, and let Him handle the rest.
So, when you hear someone ask, “Did you hear?”—maybe even when you ask yourself that question—remember, it’s not just about whether you heard something. It’s about WHO you’re listening to.
The real question isn’t, “Did you hear?” but, “Are you listening for God’s voice and responding with faith?”
God is still speaking today, guiding His people step by step. Sometimes it’s a quiet whisper, sometimes it’s a gentle nudge through wise friends or changed circumstances, but it never contradicts His Word. The important thing is to keep your heart tuned to Him, ready to move when He says go, and keep His Word written on your heart.
As for us, we didn’t know every detail before we packed the boxes and drove across state lines. We just knew God was calling, and we wanted to say yes.
Whatever you’re facing, don’t be afraid to ask, “Did you hear?”—just make sure you’re turning your ear toward the One who loves you most and will never lead you wrong.
Instead of asking, “Did I hear?” I’m now learning to ask, “What’s my next step, Lord?” Obedience matters most. Hearing God is important, but what we do with what we hear matters even more. Listen, obey, and follow. You can’t go wrong there.
The journey might not always make sense, and the path might not always be clear, but God honors a willing heart. Each step of obedience leads us closer to His plans—even if it’s just one small step at a time. Trust Him with your next move. He is faithful to lead, and you won’t regret following where He calls.
